Milk Consumption Awareness Campaign Celebrations in Kakumiro District

Milk Consumption Awareness Campaign Celebrations in Kakumiro District

"Hon. Minister of State for Animal Industry, Dr. Bright Rwamirama, represented Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja as the Chief Guest at the Milk Consumption Awareness Campaign Celebrations in Kakumiro District. The campaign, organized by Dairy Development Authority (DDA) in collaboration with Heifer International Uganda, aims to promote the importance of dairy products as part of a balanced diet, for children, vulnerable populations and all Ugandans.

The event seeks to increase milk consumption among school children to enhance their health by providing essential nutrients, such as calcium, vitamins, and proteins, that contribute to proper physical and cognitive development. This, in turn, supports government efforts to improve overall household wealth in Uganda, as healthier children lead to stronger, more productive future generations. The campaign also aligns with national agricultural policies that encourage increased local milk production and consumption, benefiting both the health of citizens and the economy through the dairy value chain.

This year, the event took place in Kakumiro District, a key region for dairy farming. The DDA visited several local schools, including Kakumiro Boys Primary School, and health centers in the area to emphasize the benefits of regular dairy consumption. Through these visits, the campaign promoted the use of dairy products not just for children, but also for pregnant women and mothers, highlighting the role of milk in boosting maternal health, enhancing child development, and speeding recovery after illnesses.

The initiative is part of Uganda’s broader strategy to increase domestic milk consumption, reduce malnutrition, and support the dairy sector, which remains vital to the livelihoods of many rural households. Dr. Rwamirama praised local farmers and schools for their efforts in adopting dairy-friendly practices and encouraged further collaboration to ensure that every child has access to nutritious dairy products."
